Granada Golf Course

Organized by Ken Kessler, of the Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables, the event included nine holes of golf and a reception under the generous shade of aged banyan trees. Players donated $50 each for their round of golf and the City of Coral Gables provided the facilities at a reduced rate to benefit the scout house building fund. A number of local businesses donated prizes and gift certificates to the event, while others, such as Starwood Urban Investments, offered generous donations to the cause.

Mayor Don Slesnick presented a proclamation declaring Wednesday, November 14th as George Merrick Foundation Troop 7 Appreciation Day in the City of Coral Gables. Foundation directors Robert and Robin Burr and Richard Dewitt accepted the mayor’s proclamation on behalf of the Troop 7 scouts.

The troop has been meeting in Coral Gables since 1922. Their original log cabin, built from pine trees fallen during the great hurricane of 1926, burned down in 1971. The current building at 1107 South Greenway, was dedicated to scoutmaster Rex Hawkins upon completion in 1976.

The George Merrick Foundation takes responsibility for maintaining the scout house and property on the Greenway, which hosts boy scout, cub scout and girl scouts programs each week. The Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables has been the troop’s charter sponsor for more than fifty years.

The scouts of Troop 7, their charter sponsors the Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables and directors of the George Merrick Foundation wish to express their great appreciation to members of the community for their generous support once again.
