News - - - Scouting Day at Coral Gables Youth Center Set For Saturday, March 22 The George Merrick Foundation, in association with the City of Coral Gables Parks and Recreation Department, Boy Scouts of South Florida Council and Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida presents Scouting Day, March 22th at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center. The public is invited to attend this free, all-day event featuring fun and games for children of all ages. The theme of this event is "Scout Out Scouting" and organizers are hoping that parents and kids in South Florida will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about scouting programs in the local community, while enjoying the outdoor events and demonstrations. A number of boy scout and girl scout troops, cub scout packs, venture posts and explorers will be showing examples of the activities they participate in and skills they learn as scouts. There will be plenty of games and fun things to do, including chariot races, archery, knot tying, Pinewood Derby car races and outdoor cooking. The Order of the Arrow will present their famous Indian drum team and Indian dance team. Explorer scouts will be demonstrating fire safety and CPR. Venture Crews will be on hand to talk about their exciting new high-adventure co-ed programs for teens and young adults. In the evening, everyone will gather around the campfire for skits, songs and a marshmallow roast. Festivities for the general public will continue until 8pm. All scouts are then invited to stay for the sleep-over camp out Saturday evening at the Youth Center. Scouts with tents will be camping on the field, while others with sleeping bags can join the indoor sleep-over in the gym. "This is a wonderful opportunity for families and kids to experience the fun and adventure that boy scouts and girl scouts enjoy on a regular basis," said Robert Burr, president of the George Merrick Foundation and organizer of Scouting Day. "The Coral Gables Youth Center is one of the finest recreational facilities in the country, and the perfect setting for this unique outdoor event." For those unfamiliar with boy scout and girl scout groups and programs in South Florida, Scouting Day offers a chance to rub shoulders with a variety of troops, pack and crews located in our communities. While the kids are having fun on the field, parents can talk to representatives from Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts about their programs and meeting locations. "We look forward to meeting new friends and talking about the great benefits, advantages and friendships that girl scouts enjoy," said Betty Shelton, Assistant Executive Director of the Girls Scout Council of Tropical Florida. "Our program encourages increased skill building and responsibility, and also promotes the development of strong leadership and decision-making skills." "Scouting Day at the Youth Center is a special opportunity for those unfamiliar with scouting groups in South Florida to see first hand why our programs are so successful," said Jeffrie Herrmann, Scout Executive for the South Florida Council of Boy Scouts. The War Memorial Youth Center, located at University Drive and LeJeune Road in Coral Gables, is a state-of-the-art community recreation center serving more than three thousand member families with year-round activities for children and adults. "The City of Coral Gables is proud to be a sponsor of Scouting Day and to work closely with the George Merrick Foundation and community scouting organizations on this worthwhile event," said Joe Abel, Parks and Recreation Director.
